Creative Apprenticeships for Young People

A high quality creative apprenticeships programme which enables its participants to learn new skills, build confidence and, through the Young People’s Arts Award, to achieve recognised accreditation for their efforts.

Understanding that each individual apprentice will have different needs, interests and strengths is core to the approach of Gallery 37 and reflected in the high level of support and guidance offered throughout the programme.

It all begins with the detailed recruitment process which helps us to assess any special needs, ranging from disability to childcare support, and make appropriate arrangements. Event staff and support volunteers help to ensure that these arrangements are carried out.

As an integral aspect of the programme a long-term action plan is created by the apprentice artist and lead artist and is reviewed and monitored throughout. It includes the development of art and design skills and, through this activity, other key skills, such as communication, literacy and numeracy. This process, of building self-confidence and accreditation, is combined with educational and career advice from local colleges and employers, extending the support beyond the duration of the project.

This intensive guidance and support helps young people to take advantage of employment and educational opportunities following completion of the programme.

The widest possible accessibility is ensured through the provision of a training and travel allowance and the covering of childcare costs, where needed. This is backed up by a high level of youth and support worker assistance.

Accreditation

Apprentice artists on Gallery 37 have been able to take up a wide range of training opportunities, leading towards a variety of accreditations. These include:

Arts Award
From 2006 Gallery 37 participants have been given the chance to work towards the Arts Award accreditation, demonstrating a commitment to and understanding of their chosen artform.

The Arts Award is a new accreditation which supports young artists and young arts leaders and leads to qualifications at level 1, 2 and 3. It is recognised by the National Qualifications Framework and accredited by the Qualifications Curriculum Authority.
