Shadow Artists

In 2000, Gallery 37 established a mentoring programme as a fundamental element of the artist’s role. Trainee artists are offered training alongside experienced artists and receive five days intensive training prior to shadowing on the four-week programme. The programme is aimed at supporting artists with experience in their art form area and a desire to develop an understanding of participatory workshops.

Trainees work alongside the professional artists, assisting and teaching the apprentice artists, whilst receiving mentoring and guidance from the professional artists. Although the level expected of the professional artists is higher, the trainees also attend the intensive training week at the start of Gallery 37.

Gallery 37 Trainee Programme Aims

  • Bring people together from different cultural backgrounds through participation and project development in the arts
  • Open up new possibilities, enabling individuals to access a wide variety of arts programmes
  • To provide a networking opportunity.
  • Encourage skills sharing, mentoring and confidence building within the arts professional sector and in turn with the wider community
  • Help the local economy through the provision of training and employment opportunities for artists and targeted groups e.g. young people
  • To promote good practice and recognition of best value in the delivery of arts programmes with young people.
  • To enable artists to engage with participatory workshops.

Training includes a range of teaching methods, in which participants are required to show evidence of learning in a number of ways. These include:

  • the production of sketch books
  • practical application of skills learned
  • ability to deal with challenging situations
  • budgeting skills
  • workshop preparation and development
  • Tasks completed within the time constraints of the course
  • evaluation and monitoring skills and the ability to react to feedback and comments
  • Observation - seeing and being able to utilise what is seen.
  • Equal Opportunities - experiencing and gaining understanding through discussion with individuals from minority ethnic backgrounds.
  • Developing participatory techniques, with the emphasis on arts practice.

Whilst the majority of the work will be practical there will be theoretical discussion within this.

Financial Support

Each participant will be given a training bursary which will be paid in the form of a cheque, as a flat rate to cover all expenses or ‘in kind’ such as with a travel card or childcare.
