2009

2009

The programme for 2009 featured forty young people aged 16-24 who worked alongside professional artists in collaboration with four of the city’s leading cultural organisations: The REP, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham Museum and Arts Gallery and SAMPAD. Pavilions Birmingham also kindly sponsored the programme, providing young Apprentice Artists with two large retail units in the heart of the city.

Transformed into working studio spaces and buzzing with creative activity, Pavilions Birmingham was the hub where young participants learned a whole range of skills during the three week programme. Activity culminated in a spectacular showcase of all the work produced, including performances, exhibitions and screenings, hosted by Pavilions Birmingham.

The following creative projects were developed by cultural partners, working collaboratively with professional artists.

Performance and Narrative

The Birmingham REP

Lead Artist: Lindsey Brown

Senior Apprentice Artists: Andre Hesson, Vicki Roberts and Pamelia Williams

Birmingham REP invited G37’s Apprentice Artists to experience a range of dramatic skills and techniques throughout this exciting project. Using a learner-led approach, the group was facilitated by experienced youth theatre workers to create a dynamic, innovative and unique performance aimed at families and young children, leading to a celebratory live performance for participants’ friends, families and the public.

Contemporary Visual Art

Ikon Gallery

Lead Artist: Effie Coe

Senior Apprentice Artist: Raji Salan

G37’s Apprentice Artists worked alongside visual artist Effie Coe using Ikon’s contemporary exhibition programme as a starting point to create their own responses. Over three weeks, Apprentice Artists learned new ways to create artwork, working both independently and collaboratively, using a wide range of media and processes.

Live Art and Video

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Lead Artist: Hetain Patel

Senior Apprentice Artist: Cassandra Wiggan

Working around the theme of individual identity in relation to the current and historical context of Birmingham, Apprentice Artists developed live performance work and video documentation in collaboration with visual artist Hetain Patel.

Film-Making

SAMPAD

Lead Artists: Sai Smith and Si Goodyear

Senior Apprentice Artist: Daniel Newell

Apprentice Artists worked with two professional film makers, developing skills through digital video filmmaking activity including storyboarding, script writing, camera operation, sound recording, editing and special effects. Apprentice Artists made their own documentary film which was screened at the end of the project to a live audience.

Additional Activity

Lead and Senior Apprentice Artists also hosted free drop-in creative workshops at Pavilions Birmingham for members of the public, including children and young people.
